Expressive & Receptive Language Enrichment

Children with receptive language disorders may have difficulty understanding what is said to them, following directions, comprehending vocabulary, or understanding basic concepts. Children with expressive language disorders may have trouble labeling, requesting, commenting or communicating in their everyday world. Elise employs a variety of strategies such as structured play, books, and manipulatives which may be used in conjunction with the PROMPT system if deemed appropriate for maximum success.

Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is a term that includes a variety of disorders that affect the way the brain processes auditory information. Individuals with APD usually have normal structure and function of the outer, middle and inner ear; however, they cannot process the information they hear in the same way as others do, which leads to difficulties in recognizing and interpreting sounds, especially the sounds composing speech. Elise assists in teaching children compensatory strategies which may help with sound discrimination, language, problem-solving, memory, attention, and other cognitive skills through a variety of activities and techniques, some of which may be computer-assisted.

PROMPT Certified Therapist

is a language–based treatment approach that provides tactile-kinesthetic information to oral musculature (jaw, lips, tongue) to guide the child’s movements for speech production. PROMPT is a treatment method based on a considerable amount of research in the areas of motor learning, cognition and social development. It can be used to treat children with a variety of disorders including Down Syndrome, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), expressive language delay, articulation/phonological disorder, and hearing impairment. Elise is the only PROMPT certified therapist in the Hamptons. (see promptinstitute.com for more information)

Fluency

Stuttering is a disorder which affects the fluency of speech. It usually begins during childhood and, in some cases, lasts throughout life. The disorder is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds, also called "disfluencies." Elise has been trained on a variety of techniques to assist both children and adults who stutter and can work individually and in small groups to help make communication less effortful and more efficient while reducing the emotional stress of this disorder.

Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is a technique used to correct the improper function of the tongue and facial muscles used at rest, for chewing and for swallowing.
